Linking two of Crete’s iconic beaches, the hike from Falassarna to Balos is more than just a journey between destinations; it’s an immersion into the island’s diverse landscapes and coastal beauty.
Starting in Falassarna, hikers pass through varied environments. The route goes from olive orchards to scrublands and then to cliff-side paths. These paths provide clear views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Along the way, hikers will pass through undisturbed coastal areas. These might include the occasional calls of seagulls or the sound of waves. There are also some secluded coves, which are good spots for resting or swimming.
Near the end of the trail, the pink sands of Balos become visible. The trail concludes with a view of the Balos lagoon, set against the Gramvousa Peninsula.
This 10-kilometer hike is of moderate difficulty and it’s important to wear suitable shoes. For those up for it, the hike offers a unique way to see Crete.
